Bovisand’s Bees, Birds & Biodiversity: Meet the Wildlife That Calls Us Home
At Bovisand Lodge Holiday Park, nature isn’t just a backdrop to your holiday, it’s an essential part of the experience. Nestled in a wooded valley with direct access to the beach, our park is alive with wildlife, from gentle honeybees to curious hedgehogs, and from perching buzzards to slow worms. We’re passionate about protecting this natural environment and giving all creatures a safe and thriving habitat.
In this post, we’re thrilled to share some of the fascinating wildlife sightings and eco-projects happening around Bovisand, along with tips on how you can spot and enjoy them responsibly during your stay.
Birdlife Around the Park
Birds are some of our most frequent and delightful visitors. Over the summer, we’ve spotted everything from buzzards perching on the trim trail in the children’s play area to a friendly kestrel who sat on the fence, watching James at work. Guests often join in the fun, sending us lists of birds they’ve identified using apps like Merlin Bird ID, from robins and tits to coastal seabirds.
To help protect our feathered friends, we’ve also supported bird ringing projects, supporting research while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the birds themselves.
Tip for guests: Bring binoculars and a bird guide app to identify the many species that make the park their home, and remember to observe from a distance to avoid disturbing them.
Our Buzzing Bees and Natural Pollinators
Our natural beehive is a busy hub of activity. Watching honeybees collect nectar from wildflowers along our woodland paths is a highlight for many guests. These pollinators are essential to the health of our wildflower paths, pond, and stream areas, helping to sustain a diverse ecosystem throughout the park.
Eco tip: Flowers along the paths are left in their natural state to encourage pollinators, so walking gently and respecting the plants helps maintain this vital habitat.
Mammals and Mini-Creatures
It’s not just birds and bees who enjoy life at Bovisand. Our grounds are home to hedgehogs wandering along the paths, playful grasshoppers hopping through the wildflower meadows, and the occasional slow worm in quieter areas. Guests often spot these mammals and insects during morning walks or evening strolls, adding a sense of discovery to every stay.
We also have two inquisitive goats who love to explore the park, often greeting guests with their charming curiosity, as well as free-roaming chickens wandering around the grounds. Both add a lively, farmyard touch to the natural environment.
Tip for guests: While the goats and chickens are friendly, you can feed them toast and grass, but no chocolate please we must maintain their natural diet and wellbeing.
Insects and Nightlife
Over the summer months, we’ve hosted moth reveals, where families and wildlife enthusiasts gather to observe these fascinating nocturnal insects up close. Moths are essential pollinators and indicators of a healthy ecosystem, and guests often leave amazed by the variety and beauty on display.
Water Habitats: Ponds and Streams
Our small pond and stream areas provide critical habitats for amphibians, insects, and plant life. These features not only support biodiversity but also create peaceful spaces where guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of water-loving wildlife. Frogs, dragonflies, and damselflies are frequent visitors here, and you might even spot birds stopping by for a drink or a quick wash.
How Guests Can Connect with Nature
At Bovisand, we encourage everyone to observe wildlife responsibly:
Stick to designated paths to protect wildflowers and delicate habitats.
Watch from a distance; avoid touching or feeding wild animals.
Bring binoculars and apps to help identify birds, insects, and mammals.
Respect water habitats, and avoid disturbing ponds or streams.
By following these simple steps, you can enjoy an enriching experience while helping us maintain the park’s natural balance.
